    chess.com claims 20 million members and presumably that's a verifiable statistic derived from counting the number of users registered with their servers.

    The audience for a World Championship is perhaps of a similar order of magnitude.

    Historically it's been enough to crash inadequately resourced servers.

    That yougov statistic continues to run and run.
