especially since the Opening Ceremony involved parading round a Miss Gibraltar
once again.
So maybe this observation from last year will do for this year too:
...let's go back to our image. An old guy surrounding himself with much younger women. No matter how much money he's spraying about, Brian Callaghan is a sleazy old man.
If you're anything like me, you might think that image wouldn't be happening if he wasn't the guy paying for it to happen.
On a similar subject, are you familiar with the CHESS PUZZLES AND PROBLEMS Facebook group? You might be unsurprised by the quantity of dubious material there.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I know it, but I don't suppose I would be surprised, no. Though I guess it depends what we mean by that. So on one level, it doesn't surprise me that this kind of tackiness takes place at a chess tournament, and it doesn't surprise me that it seems to pass without comment, but on another level, it's so in-your-face tacky that it does surprise me.
ReplyDeleteIt's always of interest to me to know how willing the women themselves were to participate in this kind of thing.
ReplyDeleteI mean, we all know there is more than 1 opinion on the nature of Women Only events.
So what are their opinions here? You may, regardless of your own distaste, be surprised to find contrary voices.
Of course, none of them read this blog.

For sure. I wouldn't mind seeing the whole thing thrashed out in public with all kinds of contrary voices. I wonder if that will happen.
